Closed-Loop BLDC Motor

BLDC Motor With Encoder — Closed-Loop Speed And Position Feedback.

Adding an encoder turns a BLDC motor into a closed-loop drive. The encoder feeds real-time speed and position data back to the controller, which then regulates current to track a commanded velocity, position or torque. Required for any application that needs accurate speed regulation, exact stopping position or torque-mode control — AGV, AMR, robotics, conveyor, CNC and packaging.

Why Add An Encoder

Open-Loop Hall Feedback Is Not Enough For Most Automation.

A standard BLDC motor uses three Hall sensors for commutation only — the controller knows the rotor sector but not exact angle or speed. That's fine for a fixed-speed fan or pump, but it leaves the motor unable to track a speed profile, hold position under varying load or recover position after power loss. An encoder closes that loop.

  • Real-time speed feedback for closed-loop velocity control
  • Exact rotor position for accurate stopping and indexing
  • Power-loss recovery (with absolute encoder)
  • Required by most servo controllers and AGV motion stacks
Encoder Selection

Pick The Encoder That Matches The Job.

The right encoder depends on whether you need speed feedback only, exact position, or power-loss recovery.

BLDC Motor With Encoder FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions.

Why add an encoder?

Closed-loop speed and position control. Without it, a BLDC motor runs open-loop on Hall sensors only — fine for fixed-speed but not for tracking a profile or stopping at exact position.

Incremental vs absolute?

Incremental (1024-2500 PPR) for speed feedback — AGV, conveyor, packaging. Absolute (17-bit) for exact position with power-loss recovery — CNC, robotics, indexers.

What protocols?

Incremental: A/B/Z (TTL or HTL). Absolute: SSI, BiSS-C, EnDat. Bus: CANopen, EtherCAT, RS485 / Modbus. Tell us your controller and we'll match.

Add encoder later?

Yes for motors with extended rear shaft and mounting boss. Retrofit kits available. For OEM projects, specify up front so housing and cable design match.

Is this a servo motor?

Encoder is the first step. Full servo also needs a closed-loop controller. See BLDC servo motor.
